Organizing with Categories

Categories help customers find what they're looking for quickly. Think of them as sections on a physical menu—Appetizers, Main Courses, Desserts, and so on.

Creating a Category

  1. Go to Menus and select your menu
  2. Click Add Category
  3. Enter a name (e.g., "Starters", "Pasta", "Kids Menu")
  4. Add an optional description
  5. Click Save

Tip: Keep category names short and familiar. "Apps" might be trendy, but "Appetizers" is clearer for everyone.

Reordering Categories

Drag and drop categories to change their display order:

  1. Hover over the category
  2. Grab the drag handle (⋮⋮)
  3. Move it to the desired position
  4. Changes save automatically

Editing a Category

  1. Click the category name or the edit icon
  2. Update the name or description
  3. Click Save

Hiding vs. Deleting

  • Hide: Temporarily removes category from your website but keeps all items intact. Great for seasonal menus.
  • Delete: Permanently removes the category. Items inside become uncategorized.

To hide a category, toggle the visibility switch off.

Category Descriptions

Descriptions appear below the category name on your website. Use them to:

  • Set the mood ("Light bites perfect for sharing")
  • Note restrictions ("Available after 5pm")
  • Highlight specials ("Chef's weekly rotating selection")

Best Practices

  • Keep it logical: Group similar items together
  • Limit categories: 4-8 categories per menu works well
  • Use clear names: Customers should know what's inside
  • Consider the journey: Put popular categories where people expect them

Common Questions

Can I have the same item in multiple categories?

Not directly, but you can create a copy of the item and place it in another category.

Why isn't my new category showing on my website?

Make sure:

  • The category has at least one visible item
  • The category visibility is toggled on
  • You've published your menu
